eSata for better and for cheaper.

Posted by Exit271

I just installed a NewerTech eSATA Extender Cable into my system (Mac Intel 3.0 8-core 20gb ram Leopard) after looking for some solutions to get more out of the 20-40 Western Digital Hard Drives we have lying around our office but rarely like to use since the fastest connection they have is 400 firewire which goes quite sluggish when we work with our r3d and HD files. The other thing I was looking for was a way to maximize the flow of data on my system. Right now I have the OS and the Apps on one 350gb hard drive, two 500gb striped together which I use to write to with the forth slot free. Oh and we have a 8tb server that I pull footage from for various projects (that server is worth every penny bytheway). I wanted another storage option for when I need to pull a project from our server to take off-site but still be able to work at the high speeds I need or if I just need to expand out my storage.

So the beauty of this solution by NewerTech is that it basically takes 2 (I read sometimes just 1) unused SATA ports inside of your system and moves them outside the systems casing which you connect to via eSATA cable(s).

The order went smoothly and for $25 bucks for a eSATA solution just can't be beat (vs. the $200 pci slot cheap solutions). I installed the kit in about 30 minutes (say what you will but I took my time since it would totally suck to tell my boss that my system was like Tiger Woods career now). The instructions were clear and very easy to follow (which is what we thought Tiger Woods career was).

I went to Best Buy to buy 2 eSATA cables but they only had them in 6 foot lengths which is way more then I needed or wanted. Plus they were $20 a pop. Luckily I found this place as I was driving back to work called Professional Cable which had them for WAY cheaper (about $4 each) and in 1.5 foot lengths... and they had a candy dish with dark chocolates. Who can beat that?

So anyways, things are great so far. I'll let you know what happens... maybe....
